If you’re considering a custom home, it’s important to partner with a well-qualified custom builder who is experienced and committed to customer service. We understand building a home is often stressful, and we’re committed to informing you, from the very beginning, about the work process and our commitment to you as our client and partner.

Take a look at these eight key questions to ask – both of yourself and your builder – before embarking on this journey.  We hope these questions spur even more thoughts and questions, and we’re always happy to talk with you when you’re ready.

  1. What is your average build time?

You’ll want to get a range of the possible length of time it’s going to take to build your custom home so you can begin to make plans for your family.

  1. What size and price range do you normally build within?

Make sure your custom builder has a strong base of work in the type of home you want to build.

  1. What was your toughest demand from a client and how did you handle it?

The answer to this question will tell you several things about a builder you are considering. Is your custom builder truly client-focused? Is your builder attuned to new ideas that you will bring to the project? Are they friendly? The partnership between you and your custom builder is going to be important for months and months so be sure you’re comfortable with him or her.

  1. Please describe the process of building a home with you.

How does the process begin, what does the middle look like, and how will the process end?  Get a good feel for what’s going to happen in the months ahead with your custom builder.

  1. What is your procedure for handling obstacles and delays?

We all know the best-laid plans can go sideways from time to time.  In the course of building a home, delays and obstacles are going to happen. The thing you want to know is how the builder deals with challenges.

  1. What type of custom home will have the best resale value?

Often, families will downsize or be forced to move due to professional changes. When this happens, the resale value of a dream home immediately becomes the most important focus for the homeowner.

  1. Can we see one of your homes and talk to a client?

This is the most important question to ask a custom builder.  Be sure you understand the level of service and quality of the result the builder has already provided others.  Finding out directly from them is the best way to assure your choice.

  1. What is your communication process?

Another way to ask this is:  How often will I hear from you about my house and how will you communicate with me?  Understand who you will contact if you have questions or concerns.
